Dialect Survey

Samad's Pop vs Soda sideboard link reminded me of a more thorough investigation of how English is used thoughout the US. The Pop vs Soda page actually links to this study, but I think it is worthy of it's own post. Be warned, I spent a good amount of time here.

That is an interesting link, but I have got one quibble. Under the pronunciation of "been" there is a a blue dot sitting squarely on Ruston, Louisiana, suggesting that people in that locale pronounce the ee the same as they do the ee in "see." In Louisiana, "been" is "bin" and "been" with the long e is a legume, although we don't really use the word "legume", and if we did, I am sure that we would butcher the pronunciation.

I'm not really sure how many samples are required to place a little blue dot on Ruston, but I suspect it may only require the response of one individual. Any redneck worth their salt pronounces been, "bin." The blue dot denoting the funky pronunciation is obviously a misguided transplant.

It's unfortunate that the results are so skewed by population density. It would be nice to somehow normalize the data such that it more clearly reveals location independent of population density....

Regardless, one of the more interesting ones for me was, "What do you call a small crutacean that curls up in a ball when you touch it?" There is a clear area in east Texas and North Louisiana that use a different term than the majority of the country. I grew up using it.

Another one: "Peeny-Wallie?" Anyone ever hear that one?

people who say 'soda' or 'pop' should all be exterminated....i have relatives in missouri and friends in chicago who should be the first to go...where on a can of 'coke' does it say 'soda', 'pop', or even 'soda pop'?? if u want a dr. pepper, or a mountain dew, do these also fall under 'soda' or 'pop', and if so, how in the hell am i supposed to know which one u want outta the damn cooler?????

The first time I heard the word "Crayfish" I nearly busted out laughing. (That's correct, we don't burst out laughing; we bust out.)

roly poly

I believe the correct pronunciation is bee-in.

An old friend (a "pop" proponent) felt slighted by "soda-pop", and wanted instead for "pop-soda" to catch on. Maybe that's what qualifies as "other" on rneff3's map.
